Every December our phone does not stop. The most common question: 'Will there be snow when we visit?' After 14 Manali winters we can answer this with complete honesty. Here is the truth about Manali snow — month by month, location by location, so you can plan with real information instead of guesswork.

Manali town sees light snow from December through February. Solang Valley, just 14km away, gets snow from December onward and is our go-to spot for guaranteed snow activities. Rohtang Pass, 51km away, is CLOSED from November to April — it is simply not accessible in winter, no matter what any agency promises. The Atal Tunnel and Sissu on the other side stay open and snowy through winter, making it our preferred alternative. Kufri near Shimla also sees snow from December through February.

Every year we hear about agencies promising Rohtang Pass access in December. Rohtang closes in November. If any agency promises Rohtang in December, they are either lying or simply don't know Himachal well enough. We are locals — we know the truth, and we never make false snow promises. When Rohtang is closed, we take every group to Atal Tunnel and Sissu instead, which delivers genuine snow scenery without the false expectations.

Snow sledging is available at Solang Valley from December onward. Skiing runs at Solang through December-February. Building a snowman in Manali town itself is best in January-February when snow accumulates in town. Ice skating has limited seasonal availability. The Solang cable car runs year-round, giving valley views in every season including winter.

January delivers maximum snow across the region — our top pick for guaranteed snow. February keeps heavy snow going, nearly as reliable as January. December from the 20th onward is when snow genuinely begins in Manali town. November only sees snow at higher altitude (Solang, not the town itself). March is when melting typically begins, so snow becomes less reliable by then.
